14m Italians, more than one quarter of the population, are now online, according to figures for September from Nielsen//NetRatings.
With a population of about 57m, 34 per cent of the country's 14m internet users, have a connection at home and 21 per cent have a connection at work. Time online is spent mostly on leisure, searching for information, e-commerce, using financial information and interacting with government bodies.
